Plan a reserve

How to read this result

Scenario target = essential monthly costs × months + extra one-off buffer. Savings gap = the target minus money already set aside, with a minimum of zero. The estimated time divides the gap by your monthly contribution and rounds up to a whole month.

With hypothetical essential costs of $2,400, three months and an extra $500, the target is $7,700. If $1,500 is already set aside, the gap is $6,200; at $250 each month it takes 25 contributions. This assumes no interest, withdrawals or changes in your costs.

Choose the scenario, then check the budget

The number of months is an input, not a universal recommendation. Consider income stability, dependants, benefits, access to cash and how much uncertainty your household can absorb. Predictable annual bills belong in their own plan so you do not count the same reserve twice.

A timeline is not a promise. A zero monthly contribution cannot close a positive gap under these assumptions. If the target is already covered, the tool reports no remaining gap.
